Odors in my house—Sewage odors are coming from a bathroom, what might cause them?
Most plumbing fixtures have a U-shaped water-filled P- trap directly below the drain. It collects particles and prevents sewer gases from entering the room. If a sink, shower or tub is unused for long periods of time, the water that routinely sits in the P-trap evaporates. This allows odors to enter the room from the septic system. To prevent or correct, slowly pour a few quarts of water down the drain from time to time. This ensures the protective water layer is maintained. Toilets have an integral P-trap and while the water can evaporate if they are rarely used, it is less common. If odors persist after filling the P-traps, it is a sign of a leak or larger problem that requires further investigation.
